Chapter Twelve

“You can do it!” Wilder yelled to Orin.

Dennis had lost count of how many times now he’d wanted to punch the asshole in his face. But this was probably the most irritated he’d been so far. It was one thing to yell like an idiot when his own son was crossing the bridge. He had no right, trying to parent Orin.

“Don’t look down, son!” Dennis bellowed, definitely louder than Wilder, but also at a higher volume than any human needed in the middle of a forest.

Orin glared at his father, clearly annoyed, wobbling a bit on the bridge.

Dennis felt a twinge of guilt. He probably shouldn’t have yelled like that.

Orin was obviously distracted.

Still, it was Wilder’s fault for starting it.

They were at survivalist training, carefully walking across a rope suspension bridge, one at a time. The Wilders were especially annoying, with Tom acting like his son was a hero, the way he kept hooting and hollering, praising every little thing his child did.

Despite looking dangerous, the bridge was safe, and getting across wasn’t that big of a deal.

Or at least that’s what Dennis thought.

But now it seemed like Orin might be having a harder time than he’d imagined.

Team Wilder got from one end to the other like squirrels racing across a power line. First Ryan, then his father, both scampering from one end to the other as if they had their own rope bridges at home. They probably did.

And Dennis was having a hard time being the bigger man. His emotions were unreliable, and he had a hard time dimming his anger.

At Tom for trying to parent Orin.

At Ryan for being the perfect son who could do everything his daddy asked him to do, while making it look easy.

And at Orin for not appreciating how hard Dennis had worked, and was constantly working, to make things better between them.

This was all for Orin, and yet his son wasn’t grateful at all.

Dennis couldn’t be the only one on Team Hoke who was willing to sacrifice.

And yet, that’s exactly where he found himself.

He’d even gone to see D.B. at High Performance Fitness. Gave the guy Goliath’s name, hoping that would eliminate the need of his having to say it out loud. But D.B., which apparently stood for Darius Brown, made Dennis work for it, only giving him a bottle of what he called horse candy, after Dennis agreed to sign up for a year of Trim, a group workout that was apparently like being able to “afford a personal trainer, even if he couldn’t.”

Yes, he was taking steroids.

But it wasn’t a drug, and nothing like drinking alcohol. Nothing that violated his AA, at least not in his mind. That didn’t mean he was eager, or even willing, to tell Susan. Dennis also didn’t want Orin to know, and he sure as hell wasn’t about to register his use in the famili app.

Yet, he was still convinced that taking the horse candy was the right thing to do. And with just two
